Seed Storage
The storage behavior of this species is orthodox (desiccation-tolerant seeds); dry to 15-20% eRH and store at -20 °C.
Germination requirements
The seeds of this species are not dormant. Sterilize seeds before placing them on wet germination paper. Place seeds two weeks in 4 ºC to germinate uniformly. Then germinate under an alternating temperature regime of 15/20 ºC (the higher temperature for 16 hours in light and the lower one for eight hours in dark).
Morphology
Fruit: Pod, narrowly oblong, pubescence, tuberculate, surface rough; 50 to 55 mm long and 6 to 8 mm wide, with 8 to 10 seeds per pod
Seed: Ellipsoid to globose, sometimes flattish, hilum 1/3 of the seed length. Surface dull, faint ruminated, dark purple brown to black (old seeds), sometimes spotted to marbled
Seed size: Length 3.8 to 4 mm, width 3.5 to 3.82 mm in an accession from Hamedan with 1000 seeds weight 20.5 g, which was collected in 2013 by Kalvandi, and the cultivated sample was identified by Mostafa Nemati, and is stored in the Natural Resources Gene Bank of Iran with the accession number 42687.
1000 seed weight: 15 to 32 g
Biological features
Life form: Annual. Stem erect-ascending, hairy, greyish-green, 50 to 100 cm height
Inflorescences and flower type and pollination mechanisms: Inflorescence axillary 1- or 2- flowered (rarely 3). Flowers hermaphrodite, zygomorphic, heteropetalous; corolla (composed of banner: uper large petal, wings: two petals adjacent to the banner, and keel: two bottom petals) lemon yellow, wings shorter than the keel; stamens are always ten in number, and their filaments are fused in a group of nine stamens plus one separate stamen (9+1). Plant monoecious, cross-pollinated, which is carried out by insects.
Time of flowering: June to July
Time of seed ripening: Summer
Seed dispersal methods: The seeds are displaced by weight.
Geographical distribution: Turkey, Iran, Caucasus and Iraq. Typus from Turkey
Distribution in Iran: Northwest and West. Mostly in provinces Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Hamedan, and Chahar Mahaal and Bakhtiari
Taxonomy
Family: Papilionaceae
Genus: Lathyrus
Species: L. chloranthus
