Seed Storage
The storage behavior of this species is orthodox (desiccation-tolerant seeds); dry to 15-20% eRH and store at -20 °C.
Germination requirements
The seeds of this species are not dormant. Sterilize seeds before placing them on wet germination paper. Place seeds two weeks in 4 ºC to germinate uniformly. Then germinate under an alternating temperature regime of 15/20 ºC (the higher temperature for 16 hours in light and the lower one for eight hours in dark).
Morphology
Fruit shape: Nut
Fruit type: Nutlets globose to oval with a small beak and hilum at base. Surface granulate, slightly lustrous, dark to yellowish light brown.
Seed size: Length 1.2 to 1.4 mm, width 1 to 1.1 mm in an accession from Salmas, West Azerbaijan with 1000 seeds weight 0.5 g, which was collected in 2003 by Heydari, Alizadeh, and Abedi, and the cultivated sample was identified by Ziba Jamehzad with accession number 14213.
1000 seed weight: 0.3 to 0.5 g
Biological features
Life form: A perennial, subshrub, woody at basal parts, 25 cm in height, with abundant branches, triangular-oval to ovate-lanceolate leaves.
Inflorescences and flower type and pollination mechanisms: Inflorescence loose head. Flowers hermaphrodite, zygomorphic, white to light purple. Plant monoecious, cross-pollinate. Pollination is carried out by insects (entomophily).
Time of flowering: Jun-August
Time of seed ripening: July-August
Seed dispersal methods: The seeds are displaced by weight.
Geographical distribution: Iran, Turkey, and Caucasia. Typus from Armenia
Distribution in Iran: Northwest. Azerbaijan and Kurdistan
