Seed Storage
The storage behavior of this species is orthodox (desiccation-tolerant seeds); dry to 15-20% eRH and store at -20°C.
Germination requirements
The seeds of this species are non-dormant. Sterilize seeds before placing them on wet germination paper. Then germinate under an alternating temperature regime of 15/20ºC (the higher temperature for 16 hours of light and the lower one for 8 hours of dark).
Morphology
Fruit: Nut
Seed: Nutlets ovoid-ellipsoid, dorsal side convex, ventral side slightly convex, areole (whitish hilum at the base) bi-lobed. Surface with round tubercles, dull, dark brown.
Seed size: Length: 0.9-1.8 mm, width 1.1-1.3 mm in an accession from Damghan, Semnan with 1000 seed weight 0.8 g, which was collected in 2008 by Salar and Madah, and the cultivated sample was identified by Ziba Jamehzad with accession number 27568.
1000 seed weight: 0.8 g.
Biological features
Life form: Perennial, many-stemmed, erect with short branches.
Inflorescence and flower type and pollination mechanisms: Inflorescence spike with closely spaced verticillasters in the upper part and one or two interrupted verticillasters in the lower part. Flowers hermaphrodite, zygomorphic, corolla 11-16 mm in length. Plant monoecious, cross-pollinate. Pollination is carried out by insects.
Flowering Period: Summer
Time of seed ripening: Late summer
Seed dispersal methods: The seeds are displaced by weight.
Geographical distribution: Endemic to Iran. Typus from Mazandaran, Lapasar.
Distribution in Iran: North and center. Mazandaran, Azarbaijan, and Tehran.
