Seed Storage

The storage behavior of this species is orthodox (desiccation-tolerant seeds), dry to 15 to 20% eRH, and store at -20°C.

Germination requirements

The seeds of this species are not dormant. Sterilize seeds before placing them on wet germination paper. Place seeds for two weeks at 4 ºC to germinate uniformly. Then germinate under an alternating temperature regime of 15/20 ºC (the higher temperature for 16 hours in light and the lower one for eight hours in dark).

Morphology

Fruit type: Silique, late dehiscent

Fruit shape: Linear, spreading or curved, submoniliform; pedicel thick, erect to upright 1 to 5 mm long; style green, thin; stigma deeply bilobed, lobes divergent or scorpioid, 1 to 1.5 mm long

Fruit size: Length 2 to 3 mm, width 1.5 to 2.5 mm

Seed shape: Ellipsoid, slightly compressed dorsoventerally sides, radicle longer than cotyledons, accumbent. Surface indicent reticulate, globrous, dull, brown

Seed size: Length 1.22 to 1.42 mm, width 0.59 to 0.87 mm in an accession from Kerman with 1000 seeds weight 0.19 g, which was collected and identified in 2019 by Ahmad Pourmirzaei, and is stored in the Natural Resources Gene Bank of Iran with the accession number 48673

Average 1000 seed weight: 0.13 to 0.19 g

Biological features

Life form: Annual, herbaceous, height 11 to 30 cm, pubescent. Stem branched at the base, ascending

Inflorescence, flower type, and pollination mechanism: Inflorescence lax raceme, flowers clustered in racemes, initially short and dense, becoming long and lax; flowers hermaphrodite, regular; pedicel much shorter than the calyx; polysepalous, sepals often rectangular, sometimes lanceolate, color green with a white membrane margin, 4.5 to 6 mm long; polypetalous, petals almost spatulate, unguiculate, 7.5 to 11.5 mm long, yellow or rarely yellow and purple. Plant monoecious, cross-pollinated. Pollination is carried out by insects and wind.

Time of flowering: June

Time of seed ripening: July

Seed dispersal methods: Seed weight

Geographical distribution: Endemic to Iran, Typus from Shiraz.
