Seed Storage

The storage behavior of this species is orthodox (desiccation-tolerant seeds); dry to 15-20 % eRH and stored at -20 °C.

 

Germination requirements

The seeds of this species are not dormant. Sterilize seeds before placing them on wet germination paper. Place seeds for two weeks in 4ºC germinate uniformly. Then germinate under an alternating temperature regime of 15/25‌ ºC (the higher temperature for 16 hours of light and the lower one for 8 hours of dark).

 

Morphology

Fruit type: Achene

Fruit shape: Obpyramidal-cuneiform, dorsal side convex, ventral side convex with longitudinal ridge,‌ trihedral in cross section, apex truncate with short crenate corona, base truncate. Surface indistinctly reticulated, dull, gray to pale brown

Fruit size: Length 4.95 to 6.01 mm, width 3.52 to 2.06 mm in an accession from Kerman, with 1000 seed/fruit weight 9.2 g, which was collected and identified in 2019 by Ahmad Pourmirzaei and is stored in the Natural Resources Gene Bank of Iran with the accession number of 48658.

Average 1000 seed/fruit weight:  9.2 g

 

Biological features

Life form: Subshrub, perennial, spiny, pubescent. Stems erect, height 15 to 25 cm

Inflorescence, flower type, and pollination mechanism: Inflorescence separated verticillasters; calyx gamosepalous‌, 12 to 20 mm in long, 5-toothed, and covered with fine warty hairs and secretory gland; corolla gamopetalous, white, 18 to 25 mm in long, 2-lipped, upper lip entire, lower lip 4-toothed, outer surface covered with dense wool-like hairs. Plant monoecious, cross-pollinated. Pollination is carried out by insects, especially bees.

Seed dispersal methods: Seed weight.

Geographical distribution: Endemic to Iran. Typus from Semnan

Distribution in Iran: Center and West. Mostly in provinces Khorasan, Semnan and Tehran
