Seed Storage

The storage behavior of this species is orthodox (desiccation-tolerant seeds), dry to 15-20% eRH, and store at -20°C.

Germination requirements

The seeds of this species are dormant. Sterilize seeds before placing them on wet germination paper. Place seeds for 4 weeks at 4 ºC to germinate uniformly. Then germinate under an alternating temperature regime of 15/20 ºC (the higher temperature for 16 hours in light and the lower one for eight hours in dark).

Morphology

Fruit type: Schizocarp (schizocarp is an indehiscent dry fruit that consists of two not compressed or compressed lattraly/dorsally carpels called mericarp)‌

Fruit shape: Mericarps elliptic to ovoid, ventral side flat with visible vittae, dorsal side convex, five-ribbed.  Surface valleculae, glabrous, dull, brown, ribs cream color

Fruit size: Length 3.07 to 4.24 mm, width 1.57 to 2.12 mm in an accession from Taft, Yazd, with 1000 seed/fruit weight 4.1g, which was collected and identified in 2012 by Mohammad Reza Arabzadeh and is stored in the Natural Resources Gene Bank of Iran with the accession number of 41532.

Average 1000 seed weight: 3 to 12 g

Biological features

Life form: Herbaceous, biennial or perennial, glabrous. Stem erect, up to 1 m or more height

Inflorescence, flower type, and pollination mechanism: Inflorescence compound umbel, with 8 to 15 rays, 10 to 40 mm in long; umbellule with 18 to 25 pedicle, 1 to 7 mm in long, flowers yellow. ‌Plant monoecious, ‌cross-pollinated. Pollination is carried out by insects and wind.

Time of flowering: Early summer

Time of seed ripening: Summer

Seed dispersal methods: Seed weight and ate animals

Geographical distribution: Probably native to southwestern Europe, long time ago, cultivated as a spice in Europe, Iran, Pakistan and North Africa. Typus from Southern Europe

Distribution in Iran: North, West, Center, Northeast and Southeast. Mostly in provinces Mazandaran, Kurdistan, Kerman, Kermanshah, Isfahan, Semnan and Tehran
